South Lamar Mixed-Use

South Lamar is a new three-story warm shell building constructed over two levels of underground parking. Ground level was designed to accommodate both retail and restaurant tenant spaces, featuring inviting dining patios that add to the active street edge. The second and third levels offer modern office space with expansive ceilings and sweeping views of downtown Austin.

At the client’s request, communal areas, including main entrance lobby, central light-filled atrium, gymnasium, and rooftop terrace, were designed with high-end finishes, most which showcase the craftsmanship of local wood workers and metal fabricators.

This project was the first in Austin to incorporate innovative large format porcelain tiles (3’x10′, shown in first image below), a material so new at the time, it had not yet been addressed in the building code. Abbie collaborated closely with the tile manufacturer and the City of Austin to successfully implement this state-of-the-art cladding system.

Dell Children’s Medical Center – Bed Tower Addition

Dell Children’s Medical Center at Ascension Seton, a state-of-the-art facility serving the Central Texas region, is a full-service hospital dedicated to pediatric care. To address expanding needs of the region, the facility added a third bed tower to complement its two existing towers.

The new three-story tower includes 72 private patient rooms and centralized support spaces designed to enhance both patient comfort and operational efficiency. The project also features thoughtfully designed healing gardens, meandering walking paths, and shaded seating areas to create a restorative environment for patients and families.

In addition to its aesthetic and functional design, the project integrates significant sustainable infrastructure including a 6,500 SF mechanical penthouse, a rooftop 36kW photovoltaic solar array and a solar hot water system. These features contributed to the project earning a 5-star Austin Energy Green Building Rating and becoming the world’s first “LEED for Healthcare” Platinum-Certified facility.

Buda Veterinary Care is a newly constructed, 6,650-square-foot, two-story animal hospital located in the historic heart of Buda, Texas. Their previous facility had spatial limitations which restricted their ability to deliver care at the level they envisioned. This ground-up opportunity allowed them to design a state-of-the-art environment featuring advanced technologies and thoughtfully integrated spaces. A few key programmatic elements include a soaring double-height, light-filled treatment room, seven exam rooms, laboratory, pharmacy, x-ray room, and two surgical suites. The new facility reflects their uncompromising commitment to elevating patient care and enhancing long-term wellness through purposeful design.

St. Austin Catholic Church Renovation

St. Austin Catholic Church, originally constructed in 1952, features a locally sourced Cordova shell limestone veneer. At the time, little to no moisture management was incorporated leading to deterioration of both the stone and the underlying steel supports. This renovation involved the careful removal of the entire façade and its replacement with a striking combination of honed and chopped-faced limestone. A modern weather barrier system was integrated to ensure long-term durability and performance. The complexity of this coordination effort was recognized with the 2019 Golden Trowel Award by the Texas Masonry Council.

Additionally, an existing exterior courtyard was enclosed to create a new lobby space for the church. Interior finishes include pink granite flooring to match existing, limestone veneer, book-matched walnut paneling, and an acoustic plaster ceiling designed to preserve quietude in the adjacent worship space.

Originally constructed in 1994, Austin Eye’s Northwest location is a residential-style medical office building that had begun to show its age. The exterior looked dated, the interior was dark and uninviting, and the compartmentalized layout hindered staff efficiency and patient flow. A comprehensive transformation was needed.

The project involved a full interior gut and redesign to create a brighter, more open, and functional environment. The exterior received a strategic refresh, most notably at the main entrance, where a new steel frame was integrated into the existing wood structure to support a 16-foot-high frameless glass system. This design preserved the building’s character while giving it a modern presence.

Additional improvements included site enhancements such as expanded parking, ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps designed to enhance safety for visually impaired visitors, and dramatic site lighting and landscape features all aimed at improving the experience for both patients and staff.

about abbie

About Me

It all started with a fragrant lemon grove perched along an Italian coast. I was fourteen when my high school architecture teacher, Mr. Coalson, challenged us to design a villa nestled in that scenic landscape.

I found joy in choreographing one’s progression through the house and building toward a powerful reward – the magnificent view as it unfolded before them. As I stayed up late drafting at the table my father gifted me, I knew I was meant to be an architect.

I went on to study architecture at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, drawn to city shaped by the greats such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and Charles and Ray Eames to name a few.

Now, with over 25 years of experience, I’ve launched Lioness Architecture to deliver a focused, informed, and streamlined approach to architectural design. As a sole practitioner, I personally guide each project from concept through construction serving as the single point of contact to ensure clarity, responsiveness, and alignment with client vision. In addition, our “proactive” precision-crafted drawings reflect deep technical expertise and attention to detail. Coupled with rigorous quality control, this approach lays the foundation for a successful and well-executed project.

I am committed to creating architecture that balances form and function while honoring my clients’ goals. The journey from the lemon grove to what is now Lioness Architecture has been fueled by a passion for design and a promise to deliver excellence in every project I take on.

Abbie served as both Project Manager and Design Architect for our Texas-licensed surgery center, guiding the project seamlessly from conception to completion. She created a striking exterior design and a floor plan that optimized staff flow and patient comfort. What could have been a daunting experience was transformed into a smooth, efficient process thanks to her strategic approach, clear communication, expert handling of AHJ processes, and her flexibility in working around my team’s demanding schedule.

Our Texas-licensed ambulatory surgery center was our first experience working with an architect and we were so impressed with Abbie’s knowledge; not only in making the space functional, but beautiful.   Abbie was fantastic to work with on our project. We were able to transform an existing plain, utilitarian fireworks warehouse into a beautiful, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. The original warehouse is completely unrecognizable! Abbie was there to guide us and make sure things were to our liking. She was a great person to have on our team.

It is without reservation that I can recommend Abbie for any architectural needs. I had the pleasure of working with her on two new three-story, fire-rated emergency exit stairwells needed for our existing hospital originally built in 1938. Her professionalism and capability were evident throughout the process.

Abbie’s exceptional problem-solving skills stood out immediately. The level of investigatory work she put into understanding our existing facility allowed us to meet code and life safety requirements. This was something I have not seen often in all my years in the field. What was most impressive to me, Abbie was always very responsive to my emails and phone calls. Being able to ask any questions and get them answered immediately helped to facilitate the project.  I know for a fact she will be an amazing asset to any project.
